William Land School Mentoring Program

The News is In!

Congratulations to everyone at William Land Elementary School and to the Westminster volunteers who played a role. William Land Elementary School has been selected by the State of California as a 2008 Distinguished School!
"These outstanding elementary schools represent many different kinds of communities, organizational structures, and student populations," said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell. "Sixty-four of these schools come from small, rural communities, 11 are charter schools, and nearly half or 156 schools have significant populations of students living in poverty and are supported by federal Title I funding."
You can read the entire press release on the California Department of Education website.
2007 and 2008 have been notable years for our partnership with the school. Our dedicated and very capable volunteers continued to provide invaluable tutoring assistance. Indeed, the school made a major advance in 2007's statewide tests, and school officials believe the Westminster delegation's efforts have contributed in a substantial way to that improvement. Our volunteer tutors deserve a big thank-you!
We also launched a new after-school dance class for third-graders. Taught by Sacramento Ballet personnel, this new class introduces another arts-related curriculum option for William Land's students (the school's Percussion Band, financially supported by Westminster in the program's early stages, also continues to thrive as a component of William Land's regular curriculum).
As a result of the dramatic improvement in William Land's academic performances, the school became eligible to apply for a Distinguished School award from the State Department of Education. The very competitive application process requires, among other things, preparation of a twenty-page, single-spaced narrative telling the school's story. A team comprised of William Land's principal, three faculty members and the coordinator of Westminster's program at the school, worked throughout the month of November to prepare and submit the application. It would be a great honor for the school to receive one of these coveted awards.
Meanwhile, we continue the other elements of our program at William Land, including organization and funding of field trips, Christmas gifts to particularly needy students and their families, and our annual Westminster Reads event.
We still have some unfilled tutor positions available and welcome new volunteers from the church. Tutoring involves one to three hours per week. No prior teaching experience or training is required.
